Puerto Vallarta History
History of Puerto Vallarta
The town was founded in 1851 and was later oficially officially designated a city. The Captain Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura conquered the region of Puerto Vallarta, and the Spanish gave the name 'Banderas' (Flags) to the bay, a name which it maintains. The port is one of the largest in Mexico and was mainly used to transport silver found in nearby mines.
Puerto Vallarta's historic district - known as the Zona Romantica - is a charming vestige of the city's past. Stucco houses and bright potted flowers flank the winding, picturesque streets and speak volumes of Puert Vallarta's colonial past as a quaint seaside town. What's more, when you take a Spanish course with Enforex, you'll enjoy our school's picturesque location right in the historic district!
In 1963, the filming of The Night of the Iguana took place on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta and brought international fame to the city, helping convert this gorgeous location into the immensely popular tourist hot spot that is is today.
